  Salt Dough Moon
by Amanda Formaro

This fun little sleepy time moon is perfect for your little one's bedroom. You can even make several and create your own moon mobile!

You will need

1 cup salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup water
acrylic paint in pastel yellow, navy blue, white, pink, and black
paintbrush
household sponge
pencil
toothpick
clear acrylic sealer
ribbon

IMPORTANT NOTE: This recipe for salt dough makes a lot of ornaments. If you only plan on making a few, cut this recipe into fourths or in half.

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

Preheat oven to 250 F. Mix together, salt, flour, and water until a dough is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour, continue to do so until stickiness is gone. BE CAREFUL. Do not add too much flour, this will dry out the dough and will cause it to crack before you get a chance to bake it.

THIS DOUGH IS NOT EDIBLE.

Roll out the dough. To make the moon, you can either use a moon shaped cookie cutter or do like we did and simply cut one out with a steak knife (parents should do this!) Our moon is approximately 2 inches long, but the size is completely up to you!

Use a pencil to create the smile, sleepy eye, hat brim, and dots on hat pom pom. Use the pencil to create a hanger hole in the top of the hat.

Place the moon onto the cookie sheet and bake for approximately 2 - 2.5 hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. For best results, allow moon to cool and dry overnight, or for at least 4 hours.

To decorate, paint the moon's face with pastel yellow, the hat with navy blue, and the hat brim and pom pom with white. Use toothpick and black paint for the mouth and eye. Dab household sponge into pink paint, dot off excess paint onto paper towel. Gently dab the cheek area with the pink paint left on the sponge.

When paint is dry, thread the hole with a piece of white, light blue, or pink ribbon and tie the ends together. Spray moon with matte finish acrylic sealer.

Note: You can also create a mobile using several moons or glue a magnet strip to the back for a fun refrigerator accent.
